So much for going to bed early
I started Summer Intensive Session today. The whirlwind that will be my last months in Korea is just beginning.
Summer Intensive means that I work 9 hour days, Monday through Friday. 9-8:30, with a 2 hour lunch break. That's an 11 hour work day, and NINE of those hours are spent in the classroom actively teaching. Yikes, that's long. Sure I do get overtime pay, but my boss has a wiley way of tweaking with the schedule so we end up getting a fraction of the overtime pay we feel we deserve, yet there is nothing we can do about it. But hey, its what I signed up for.
So gone are my leisurely days of sleeping in til 10, rolling into work by 2. The dream 6 hour shift. I enjoyed it while it lasted. And all of you at home with stressfull jobs are hating me right now. But I'm going to be putting in my time this summer, let me tell you!!!
Speaking of throwing bananas on the field, Korea plays their first World Cup game tomorrow, against Togo. It starts at 10:00 p.m. here, which means I will actually get to watch it without staying up til 4 a.m. I have really looking forward to the World Cup actually. Generally, I couldn't care less about sports, but when there is a big tourny or something important that gets people all rallied up, I really get into it. Its not the game or the competition, its the unity and excitement of the fans. I love the way sports bring people together ... united against a common opponent... it actually works much like war, but without the violence (usually).
Anyway, I really do hope Korea does well in the World Cup, mainly because it will be awesome to be a part of the celebration that follows. I love public celebration! Koreans LOVE soccer, and they are terribly nationalistic...a large percentage of them say they think Korea really will do well this year, although most of the rest of the world says that their great performance last time was a fluke buoyed by the fact that they were on home ground. Regardless, if they do well, it will be fun, and if they don't that icky dark cloud of disappointment will hang for a few days at least.
Korea! Fighting!!

GGGGGGOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!
World Cup time huh? Are Koreans champions of soccer? I don't even know what that means. Went to bed late last nite and feel latargic this am. Poor me! Sounds like Koreans love soccer simlar to Spain or Brazil. It's been way long since I have kicked the ball around, like maybe high school? Whoa...actually that was the first sport I played competatively (I was 6 with missing teeth but kickin' ass!)
Those are brutal work days! At least there isn't too much travel and gas money involved. How much is gas overseas?
Sorry I have been neglecting my sis via email. When I am going down to Barstow 3 or 4 days/wk. and running the biz its easy to get distracted with lounging around or watching TV when I get home. Actually, in the summer time it seems i am checking the weather conditions less so there ya go, less online time in da summer. I have been taking beautiful shots of the lake and deserts, it doesn't do the area justise though. I went running (yes i am still sore) yesterday after a meeting in Running Springs (look for the mtn. town in the next big Nic Cage comeback action thriller!! Big Bear too!) and the flowers are amazing. Wild iris everywhere and purple lupin gives the area a new feel...actually it was my first time up that trail. I walk or run new places to avoid the phrase "shit, I'm stuck with no cell phone coverage!!!! Omygawd!!!
Speaking of dat, I went out exploring last wednesday after working in Barstool. Ended up 30 miles north on HWY 15 at Afton Canyon, a rare desert water source with old cliffside mines, huge caves and spooky canyons (one canyon is called just that). I WAS following directions but about 7 miles in I ended up in a dry sandy wash, thinking that was where the road was going but noooooo.....it was no more than a sand trap for dudes with trucks that don't seem to handle this particular type of surface. Stuck again!? Shovel. One word, one tool that will save your ass time and time again. Well, that and some flat rocks. Acutally the rocks only provided a nice desert workout cause I had to walk around to find the right ones, back and forth....like a caveman. Or something else that carries rocks around. Anyway...the rocks sucked a big one, so I MacGyvered some dry wood from the wash and eventually that worked fine. More than 2.5 hrs later, dark, sandy, bloody and sweaty I was bouncing my happy ass back to Barstow. No money, no attorney, and no story for the paper. And I had this huge fucking hotel bill to deal with. (Fear and Lothing moment..) Back to barstow by 11:00pm with only Del Taco to sustain me. Could of been worse....could of had to hike out 7 miles to the hwy with no services and pitch dark. But I didn't!
We had a Pirate Faire last weekend. My booth, Captn' Dan's Mobile Massage Cove was rocking with cool people and giving half price Pirate Massages. The money could have been better, but the weekend was slow with calls anyway so I came out ahead and had a fun time. There was a full size Pirate ship and battles with cannons and guns and lots of great outfits. Some folks are into this all year, Ren Faires and other festivals you dress up for. Burning Man isn't one of those events they do cause ya can't hawk your wares (expensive "period" clothing, weapons, and a basically impulse buy crap, insense, lalalalala).
My costume was simply but I looked a bit sally with my black wig...also an eye patch and striped socks and a mustasage that wouldn't stay on. Some of the outfits were the real thing...a few guys were right out of "Carrabiean"--dead on Captn Jack Sparrow. Probably really warm too. Dress up is fun but not if your sweating constanly!
Mom wants to come down even though we are in the middle of planning all our stuff for the reception, honeymmon to Kaiaui, Syd's movie and busy summer massage schedule. We will see her in Sept anyway. She asked what friends I would invite and I answered Andy, Anthony, and Brian Murphy. Soooo glad we are NOT doing so huge thing with rented space and DJ and isles and RSVPS. I would feel weird contacting some of the friends to come since I haven't really seen so many up in SJ. This way is fun to plan and simple to organize. Stress sucks! It will be fun to see Larry and Paula and COusin Johnny too. ANd we get to stay at the SF Farmont Hotel. Right now we are tying down plans for Kauai. I love to go places that are tropical, its so out of my normal zone. Our lake is still chilly so it will be nice to swim in warm water again.
OK, back to figuring out what the hell I'm doing today. I put up your hammock last week and love to chill in it. Almost feel asleep yesterday even. Nice. Its' great for camping too! (if ya got trees) Of yeah, Syd shot her demo for FLYGIRL and holy shit it looks amazing. Very professional with clean editing and a soundtrack too! She is going to send it off tommorrow to her investor up in SF so she can get the funding through and make the movie! DUDE!! I'll give you a hint on the financial backing: the amount rhymes with Napoleon Dynamite.
Love Danny
Miss you come home soon
